Program: IOWATER, Iowa’s volunteer water quality monitoring program, empowers
citizens to take a proactive approach to water quality. By monitoring the water resources
in our backyards, we can ensure the protection, longevity and productivity of high quality
water resources, as well as evaluate, assess, and improve those of lower quality. By
becoming an IOWATER volunteer, you are not only provided with monitoring equipment, but
you are also given the freedom to monitor wherever and whenever you choose. The program
brings people closer to the landscapes that surround them and encourages them to develop a
sense of place within the watersheds in which they live. This tie between ourselves and
the water resources that give us life will lead to the understanding, respect, and
protection of Iowa’s water bodies long into the future.

Facilities: Lakeside Laboratory's campus consists of about 140 acres on Little Millers
Bay, on the shore of West Lake Okoboji. The entire shoreline of Little Millers Bay is
Lakeside Laboratory property, and the bay and adjacent uplands and wetlands are used as a
natural classroom in most Lakeside courses. Many of Lakeside's buildings are listed on the
National List of Historic Places and collectively they constitute the Iowa Lakeside
Laboratory Historic District. The Caylor Prairie Preserve, Freda Hafner Preserve and the
Excelsior Fen Complex are major natural areas close to the Laboratory.
Program: Through research facilities and natural areas, undergraduate and graduate
students are given the opportunity to get hands-on experience working with a variety of
natural and human environments through field-oriented summer courses. Credit and
non-credit short courses are offered to the general public and public programs are held
every Sunday and Wednesday evening. Students or researchers who wish to conduct
